Hospitals and the health systems to which they belong play an important role in the Massachusetts health care system and are critical to achieving the Commonwealth’s goals of controlling costs while improving the quality of care delivered. CHIA monitors and provides meaningful analysis on Massachusetts hospitals and hospital health systems through a variety of metrics and studies. See the financial metrics formulas and calculations used for hospital and health system financial reporting.
Starting with HFY 2025, the year-to-date financial dashboard has been expanded to include additional data on hospital health systems and interactive views of the graphics previously published in the quarterly PDF reports. In addition, the databook has been enhanced to include new features and more accessibility to filter and compare entities.
The majority of hospital and hospital health systems have a fiscal year end of September 30 and therefore the dashboard has not been updated. The databook through September 30, 2025 only includes entities for which the period does not represent the end of their fiscal year. The most recent data is available for Cambridge, Shriners, Tenet, and Trinity hospitals.
Key Findings from YTD through June 30, 2025
- Statewide acute hospital median total (2.7%) and operating (1.8%) margins increased compared with the prior year.
- Forty-three of 56 hospitals (77%) reported positive total margins during this period, while 35 (63%) reported positive operating margins.
- Of the 21 hospital health systems (HHS) reporting during this period, 17 (81%) reported positive total margins and 9 (43%) reported positive operating margins. The median total margin for HHS was 2.9% and the median operating margin was -0.2%.
